| Optio | They're always testing new stuff. The thing is is that if the old stuff does the job, no need to replace. Take the Mp5: The best SMG in the world and it's like 20 years old. It does the job well (exeptionally well to be accurate), so there's no need to replace. However, new models of it come out, so they adopt the new ones because they can trust that the old model did the job, the new one will do it better. Of course, stuff justs get old then ancient so whatever branch of the military is faced with a problem: Replace it completely? Or get a new version of it? Most often, they'll get a new version like what happened with the M16 family (M16, M16A1, M16A2, M16A3, M16A4). In this case, they made the firearm better every time. Sometimes, you get the military taking a firearm and converting it to meet different roles such as the M16A4 Carabine which came from the M16A4, but a shortened version used for more enclosed areas. If your really interested in this sort of stuff watch the show called FutureWeapons. It's on the Military Channel (I love that channel and it's worth what I pay) or discovery once in a while. They test new stuff, and they've tested many new SMGs to replace the "aging MP5" but most of the time they don't go very far. In the end, to have something new be put in the military, it has to be because there's a new need for it (like what happened from the M1 Garand to the M16).
