| Optio | Post; Replace Humvees ??The US army in Afghanistan and in the Iraq has 24,000 HUMVEES in the employment. The salient vehicles, which are sold in the meantime also as civil variant of the mark Hummer, however have a bad reputation: As standard equipment an effective armoring is missing to most models against bomb attacks and bombardment. A lack with deadly consequences: More than 350 US soldiers already died in a Humvee, after this had driven or was attacked on a bomb. The hasty pushed rigging with armoring partly robbed its cross-country capability, because the cars became simply too heavy. Also the wear of the chassis increased thereby. Humvees were developed in times of the cold war particularly for the employment in the background - a light body should make the vehicles suited for the hilly Europe. For employments in theaters of war, the experiences show that particularly in the Iraq, Humvees however are hardly suitably. Engineers of the Georgia Tech Research Institute presented now a Protoype, which - developed further up to production stage - could replace, perhaps soon the Humvees. The Ultra AP (Ultra Armored Patrol) called vehicle offers place for four passengers. The passenger space is protected with a multilevel Hightecharmoring, which consists among other of aluminum, steel and plastics. This is to save weight, in order not to limit maneuverability. The mobile is propelled from a diesel engine. On board computers are to support the driver when driving and to optimize a cooperating of suspension, brakes and steering elements, so that the car remains in the trace also in difficult situations. The body is conceived in such a way that the Ultra AP can roll over without any damage. "We wished, we would have this vehicle already now", said a US officer to the newspaper "USA Today". Starting from 2008 the Ultra AP could replace gradually the Humvees. Military do not only demand better protection for the passengers, also a clearly smaller waste of gasoline stands on their desire list. Besides that the car electrics must be adapted to the requirements of the computer era. http://www2.onkarriere.t-online.de/c...8380,tid=i.jpg http://www2.onkarriere.t-online.de/c...8512,tid=i.jpg Can you Guys tell me where i can find some more Infos about that Ultra AP?

| Tribuni Angusticlavii | The HUMVEE was created during the Cold War, if I remember correctly they made it just wide enought fit through Europian train tunnels. But, the whole point is that the HUMVEE isn't a combat vehicle, it is a transport truck, just like the jeeps of WWII, Korea and Vietnam. The HUMVEE has had a good run, but her job was to transport and move troops. I have a question, How do you uparmor a four ton vehicle to withstand a 500 lb. round bomb that can filp a twenty ton APC? The truth is you can't. The Military should keep the HUMVEE, not as a combat platform but as a light and medium duty truck and transportation platofrm. Quote:

| Tribuni Angusticlavii | My opinion is right in line with Seaman. I think the HUMVEE is still a very good, strong, vehicle. The problem is that ONE of the jobs it is being asked to do, it is underperforming. Therefore, get a vehicle to do that ONE job and keep the humvee for all the rest. I think I've been writing about the need for an urban combat vehicle since I got here since the HUMVEE has been proven to be relatively ineffective at patrol. However, there are a great many tasks for the humvee and that the humvee does splendidly. |
