Yeah, tactics have evolved a lot in every stage of the game.

If you want just infantry tactics then the basic concept of find-fix-flank-finish from WW2 is still the basic tactic used by modern infantry. Nothing works better than keeping a guy stuck then hitting him from the site. But the flexibility and firepower has increased hugely. Now when it comes to tactics you have fireteams where every man knows exactly what he should be doing at all times. This is training far above the kind of loose squad based ideas in WW2, instead you see highly skilled highly professional tactics where every situation has a plan and every man knows how he should react in the team. Then you move into MOUT tactics which has blown wide open since the early days of WW2. You have all manner of tactics on how to room clear, how to handle stairs, how to search houses, corners, sewers, roofs, etc. etc. that just wasn't around in WW2.

Now if you want to move on to broader concepts of tactics you can look at the tactics used in Afghanistan. The most effective tactic was a guy with binoculars, a map, a GPS, and a radio sitting on top of a mountain. Just sight the enemy and guide the aircraft in to decimate them with high explosives from 10,000 feet above. In WW2 airplanes just straffed whatever they could find.

Many things have changed, the type of war that you are fighting has change out of all recognition. You are mainly fighting a enemy you can't see that will dress like a civilian when it suits them. You will face more hit and run tactics, as your enemy will pick the time and place where he will attack and then melt back into the general population. You will rarely ever meet your enemy face to face, heavy tank forces will not be a great deal of good to you, your air power is restricted due to problems of heavy civilian casualties. Heavy artillery will not do you much good either. It will all be down to the man on ground with a gun in his hand and just how good he is.

Phoenix 80.... there could be very few actual battlefield scenarios that you are thinking about. Apart from Korea and the invasion of Iraq, you are fighting an unseen enemy like Mogadishu, Vietnam and currently Iraq. The classic war is disappearing ask the Russian soldiers about Afghanistan and Chechnya.

I don't think it has yet been mentioned that infantry are increasingly being used as eyes on the ground for air-delivered munitions.
