Post; Putin bill to cut conscription time in half

Quote:
President Vladimir Putin has ordered the Russian government to complete and send to parliament a bill that would reduce the term of military conscription from two years to one.

The bill foresees exemptions for students who have completed courses of military training at their higher education institutions, and who graduate from higher vocational schools.

The bill also introduces some other changes and cancels some of the reasons for deferals.

If approved, the bill will come into force from Jan. 1, 2008.

just makes me wonder what the heck are the conscripts doing there for two years anyway. I served our already shortened basic military service which was six months from the previous eight, some say the six months isn't enough but I say it was well enough, shorter service time means more intense training.
Time will tell how the russian army is going to arrange this

They really are only treated like cannon fodder anyway so I doubt there is much thought going into the training aspect of this proposal. Its a clearly political move.
