Lytham St Annes
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Map sources for Lytham St Annes at grid reference SD342278

Lytham St Annes is a town in the Fylde district of Lancashire, England. The original twin towns of Lytham and St-Annes-on-Sea (the latter nearly always abbreviated to St Annes)have grown together and now form a seaside resort, sometimes seen as a smaller but grander alternative to nearby Blackpool.

St Annes was originally called Kilgrimol (there is still the family name Kilgrimol living in St Annes to this day) although few people that live in St Annes realise this is true history. St Annes was originally founded by Vikings.

The town is situated on the Lancashire coast south of Blackpool at the point where the coast line turns east to form the estuary of the River Ribble leading inland to Preston. St Annes is situated on the northern side of the turning and, like Blackpool, overlooks the Irish Sea, whereas Lytham is on the eastern side and overlooks the Ribble estuary.

St-Annes-on-Sea was a 19th century planned town. The town of St Annes was mostly laid out according to a plan drawn up by businessmen who saw the economic benefits of attracting large numbers of visitors from the mill towns to the east. It retains much of its original character today, but has less style than Lytham, its near neighbour. St Annes has had a lot of property development over recent decades and as a result many property construction development companies have destroyed many old historic building that had grand architecture that will never be built again to the same standards. It is a traditional quiet Victorian / Edwardian seaside resort with up-market hotels, a sandy beach, donkeys, a small pier and ice cream stalls. Sand dunes fringe the beach, and the town has an excellent, but little known sand dune nature reserve, and very good floral displays. St Annes beach hosts a number of kite flying events each year. The beach to the north of St Annes has been an internationally-renowned sand yachting location for many years, although there is currently a moratorium on the sport since 2002, when a vistor to the beach died after being hit by a sand yacht.

Lytham's tree-lined streets are flanked by small shops that are still family businesses. There are some particularly good speciality food shops. Lytham brims with old fashioned charm. Lytham Windmill is a local landmark on the green by the beach.

The town's history has seafaring links, the economy previously being founded on fishing and shrimping. Later, wealthy industrialists moved from the east of the county.

Today Lytham St Annes is famous for golf, The Green, the recently restored Windmill and Old Lifeboat House Museum, and Lytham Club Day, a local festival each June. The Green overlooks the estuary of the river Ribble and the Welsh mountains.

Rather unusually for a small town, there are four golf courses, the most notable being the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club, which is one of the host courses for the British Open championships. The coming of this major sporting event (approximately once every 4 years) brings a major influx of visitors, including the world's media, into what is a fairly peaceful community.

The population of the town is considered somewhat aged, and it is a popular place to retire to. There is a considerable number of nursing and retirement homes, many located in former large houses along Clifton Drive, one of the main roads linking Lytham and St Annes.

It has been suggested that the town has more churches than pubs (another unusual feature), but this has not been verified quantatively.

One of its minor claims to fame is the boat used in the film The African Queen was made in a small Lytham St Annes boat yard.

Ansdell is a small district between Lytham and St Annes. It has its own railway station (shared with Fairhaven), the "Ansdell Institute" club and a small library. It is famous because of Richard Ansdell RA, an artist who lived in the area and painted a large number of oil pictures of dead pheasants held by spaniel dogs and other similar hunting and shooting subjects. In fact, Ansdell enjoys the distinction of being the only place in England to be named after an artist.

Fairhaven, another district between Lytham and St Annes, lies between Ansdell and the coast. It is named after Thomas Fair, an early resident of Lytham St Annes. Its main claim to fame is its artificial lake, known as Fairhaven Lake or more formally as the Ashton Marine Park, which is an important wildfowl habitat. Its other famous landmark is the Fairhaven United Reformed Church, which is of unusual design, being built in Byzantine style and faced with glazed white tiles, and commonly known as the White Church, or 'the mosque' due to the dome shaped towers protruding from its sides.

Since 1984 Lytham St Annes has been twinned with the German town of Werne.

Lytham library is a particularly notable aspect of this town.

Peoria, AZ

"The City of Peoria began as a small farming community near Phoenix in the 1880s. William J. Murphy’s vision of fertile farm lands fed by water from the Salt River became reality with the completion of the Arizona Canal in 1885. Once this canal was completed, Murphy travelled east to interest people in settling in this new community. He was successful in catching people’s attention – over 5,000 acres (20 km²) of land in the new district was purchased by citizens from Peoria, Illinois. Four families from Peoria, Illinois were among the first to move to Arizona to occupy and work their land. The founders decided to name the new area Peoria to bring a sense of home to this unfamiliar area.
Residences in the new community quickly sprang up, and by 1888, the population of the town was 27. A school and Post Office were established by 1889. More people followed the original families and Peoria continued to grow as a farming community. The farmlands were fertile and the people made a good living, despite having to battle swarms of red ants and the occasional rattlesnake in the kitchen.
By 1910, the city's population was 300, and by 1920, the population had reached 2,370. The population did not grow too much until the 1990s, and in 1998 it had reached 87,048 and in 1999 was 101,235.
Peoria was incorporated as a city in 1954, with boundaries covering one square mile (2.6 km²) of land. The warm climate and small-town atmosphere of Peoria continued to attract people, and still do today."

Miami Lakes, Florida. USA

Miami Lakes
is a former census-designated place and incorporated town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the former CDP had a total population of 22,676. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 22,688[1].
The development was constructed by Sengra, now known as The Graham Companies starting in 1962 on land that was formerly occupied by the dairy of Florida State Senator Ernest 'Cap' Graham. The Grahams stated for many years that it would be a 30-year development but they are still developing 43 years later. The original Miami Lakes development, east of the Palmetto Expressway, was master planned by Lester Collins with curving tree-shaded roadways and numerous curving lakes which are unusual compared to most surrounding areas with treeless streets on a square grid and rectangular lakes. This original development, which is on the east side of the more recently designated Town of Miami Lakes, has neighborhood shopping centers, tot-lot parks, and a town center named Main Street. A significant portion of Miami Lakes is still owned by the Grahams, mostly apartment buildings, shopping centers, office buildings and still undeveloped land. Former U.S. Senator Bob Graham, younger step-brother of family patriarch William "Bill" Graham, is one of the owners, and the late publisher of the Washington Post, Katharine Graham, had a share by marriage. Philip L. Graham even had a Miami TV station (WPLG) pick their station call letters after his name.

History

The town of New Iberia dates from 1779, when a group of 300 immigrants from Alhaurín de la Torre, in the Spanish province of Málaga came up Bayou Teche and settled here. The Spanish settlers called the town "Nueva Iberia" while the French referred to the town as "Nouvelle Ibérie," and the English called it "New Town." The state legislature resolved the situation in 1847, naming the town New Iberia.

History

The Town was Incorporated in 1793 and was formerly the "south precinct" of the Town of Braintree. Randolph was named after Peyton Randolph, the First President of Continental Congress.
Randolph was formerly the home of several large shoe companies. Many popular styles were made exclusively in Randolph, including the "Randies". At the time of Randolph's incorporation in 1793, local farmers were making shoes and boots to augment household incomes from subsistence farming. In the next half century, this sideline had become the town's major industry, attracting workers from across New England, Canada and Ireland and later from Italy and Eastern Europe, each adding to the quality of life in the town. By 1850 Randolph had become one of the nation's leading boot producers, shipping boots as far away as California and Australia.
The decline of the shoe industry at the beginning of the twentieth century led to Randolph's evolution as a suburban residential community. Boot and shoe making has been supplanted by light manufacturing and service industries. The town's proximity to major transportation networks has resulted in an influx of families from Boston and other localities who live in Randolph but work throughout the metropolitan area.

Government

Almere Haven

Almere Haven is the oldest part of Almere. Although Almere Haven does not have its own railway station, it is well connected to Amsterdam and the rest of Almere by a good bus rapid transit system.
Almere Haven has a small harbour with ferry connections to the Dutch mainland, and is surrounded by large groves of poplars containing buzzards, foxes, small deer, and owls. The closest wooded areas are Het Beginbos and Waterlandsebos.
Almere Haven features the most idealistic architecture in Almere, when the goal was to build a model city on the newly reclaimed land of Flevoland. The city was planned before increasing population pressure in Almere and rising property prices caused compromises on the original vision.
All housing developments are built to provide views of greenery and open spaces, and each group of houses is clustered around a little park, usually with easy access to the surrounding forests, so residents of Almere Haven do not have the sense of living in a crowded urban area.
Almere Haven does not have the inconveniences of busy traffic and car pollution and road noise because all roads are cul-de-sacs connecting to a well-hidden ring road that provides the only car access in and out of Almere Haven. The bus road system also forms a ring and most residents are no more than a few minutes walk from a bus stop.
