Polish troops take over Baltic Air-policing mission
2008-03-12 Change of military units on Baltic air policing mission ceremony will be held in Lithuanian Air Force Aviation Base (Siauliai) on March 14. Royal Norwegian Air Force troops currently in charge of the mission will hand over responsibility to the Polish contingent.


This is the second time Polish Air Force will be conducting Baltic air policing mission. Polish troops have already been deployed to the mission from January to March in 2006.


The change ceremony will be attended by the Lithuanian National Defence Vice-Minister Antanas Valys, Ambassador Extraordinary and. Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Norway to Lithuania Steinar Gil, Ambassador Extraordinary and. Plenipotentiary of Poland to Lithuania H.E. Janusz Skolimowski, Commander of Lithuanian Land Force Brig. Gen. Vytautas Zukas, representatives of Norwegian and Polish air forces, leadership of Lithuanian Air Force and Aviation Base, representatives of Siauliai city and district, and other guests.


100 troops serving in the Polish contingent will guard Baltic airspace with four Mig-29 fighters.


After a three and a half months’ period the mission will be passed over to Germany which will be the country’s second time too.


From 2004 to 2006 the Baltic Air-policing mission was held by Belgian, Danish, British, Dutch, German, American and Polish soldiers on a three-month rotation basis. Forces of Turkey, Spain, Belgium and France were in charge of mission on a four-month rotation basis from spring 2006, and troops of Romania were responsible for he mission for three months, Portuguese for one and a half months, and Norwegians – for three months.
