Pilots presumed dead in KF-16 crash, second in 2007
July 23, 2007
The Korean Air Force said yesterday two the two pilots of a KF-16 fighter jet that crashed in the Yellow Sea Friday night are presumed dead.
“We are still investigating the cause of the crash,” said Bae Duk-hwan, a Korean Air Force major in charge of public relations. “But we think it is likely to be one of the two common causes of a crash: temporary spatial confusion, the effects of vertigo or a blunder in maintenance.”
The fighter jet, piloted by Major Lee Kyu-jin, 38, and First Lieutenant Park In-chul, 27, crashed 90 kilometers (56 miles) from an air base in Seosan, South Chungcheong, at 9:02 p.m. Friday, 38 minutes after takeoff from the base, Bae said.
Two fighter jets, including the one that crashed, had been undergoing night training at the time.
