Hi,

Source:BBC News

A new report claims to provide the most concrete evidence yet of direct links between Pakistan's ISI intelligence agency and the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The report says the ISI is providing funding, training and sanctuary to the Taliban on a scale much larger than previously thought.

The document was prepared by the London School of Economics (LSE).

A spokesman for Pakistan's military rejected the claims as part of a malicious campaign against the country.
'Rubbish'

The report's author spoke to nine Taliban field commanders in Afghanistan earlier this year.

He concludes that Pakistan's relationship with the insturgents runs far deeper than previously realised.

Some of those interviewed suggested that the ISI even attends meetings of the Taliban's supreme council. They claim that by backing the insurgents Pakistan's security service is trying to undermine Indian influence in Afghanistan.

The report concludes that without a significant change in approach by Pakistan, both the Afghan government and international community will find it impossible to end the insurgency in Afghanistan.

The spokesman for Pakistan's military said the claims were "rubbish" and part of a malicious campaign against the country's military and security agencies.

There's been rumors for years that ISI may have created or supported the Taliban to try to control Afghanistan by proxy.

In the early years the ISI did help create, finance and support diplomatically militarily alongside the Saudis who gave most of the finances. But after september 11 and the refusal by the Taliban to handover bin laden and exile Al Qaeda created a rift with the ISI and the Saudis. Then General Musharaf head of the Pakistani military and state had the Pakistani military and ISI to cease all support for the Taliban on the basis of the refusal to hand over bin laden and exile Al Qaeda and also on the basis that the Taliban who knew that September 11 was going to happen failed to inform their ISI handlers about the plans; therefore, the Taliban created a situation that was not sanctioned by the ISI where support for it by the ISI and the Pakistani military was untennable so all ties were severed and Pakistan choose to support the Taliban removal.

Now I doubt the very Taliban they removed, the very Taliban that is now killing Pakistani soldiers in great numbers, the very Taliban that is carrying out bombings within Pakistan and murdering hundreds of Pakistani citizens is being supported by the ISI. Their is bad blood between the Taliban and the ISI/Pakistani military/government.

I don't see the news as well. The links between Pakistani secret services and Afghan militants go back to the early 80's. Is that coincidence that Pakistan later became one of just 3 countries that recognized Taliban government?
