Post; Neo-cons voice concern over Chinese PLA police unit in Haiti

U.S. officials are voicing concern about a different kind of Chinese visitor to this part of the world: A 127-man Chinese police unit, specializing in riot control, is scheduled to join United Nations peacekeeping troops in Haiti later this month.
It will be the first time China has participated with such a big police unit in such a mission anywhere in the world.

The Chinese military also will send six 20-man boats, and has offered a helicopter support unit. According to U.S. officials, it's part of a long-term Chinese plan to gain diplomatic influence in Latin America -- and to undermine U.S. clout in the region.

''For anyone who cares about democracy, transparency, rule of law and human rights, the Chinese arrival in this region is not good news,'' a U.S. official told me. China already is the biggest backer of Cuba and Venezuela in world forums, the official said.

Indeed, something is going on here.

To be honest it gives me the heebe jeebies that units of the PLA will be in the Caribbean. But then thats how the UN works they do what they want.
Guess it could be worse though I could be a Dominican and have to worry about them being right over the border from me.

China is probably the last Communist State that can lend any real support to the few remaining communist nations or communist leaning nations. In this hemisphere that would be Fidel in Cuba and that ding a ling Hugo Chavez in Venezuala.(Who IMO never learned to do a good PLF as a paratrooper and rapped is melon on the ground one too many times.).

Combine that with the great many marxist/soicalist/communist guerilla organizations operating in Latin America i.e. FARC,MRTA, Sendero Luminoso, Tupac Amuaro etc.

I am not comfortable with giving an affirmed Communist Nation from another hemisphere a foothold or base of operations in this hemisphere.
Let alone a "peace keeper" mission.
Sorry don't and won't trust em. But that could just be because of my age and cold war expierance.
