Montrose's Toast info

"He either fears his fate too much,
Or his desserts are small,
Who dares not put it to the touch,
To win or lose it all!"

James Graham, 5th Earl of Montrose
1612 to 1650
Royalist General during the English Civil War

I'd rather be a Soldier with a mule and mountain gun, than Knight of old, with spurs of gold, or Roman, Greek or Hun. For when there's trouble brewing, they always send for me!

If you have no faith in your abilities, or just no nerve, you won't risk everything to win. This is a way of showing that you are willing to do so and damn the consequences.

Who dares, wins. I choose the danger, etc.

Better

I'd look really silly trying to understand Norwegian, so it evens out

And in the end, Montrose lost everything, including his life.

We all lose our life in the end. Montrose had a year 1644-45 described as a year of miracles by some commentators. His military achievements (against superior enemy forces) assisted by his second Alasdair MacColla (a great tactician and front line commander - first into battle with his troops) are incredible. Overcome your fear and stand for what you believe whatever the opposition.
