McCain chooses Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for V.P.

By LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writer 7 minutes ago

DENVER - John McCain tapped little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice presidential running mate on Friday in a startling selection on the eve of the Republican National Convention.

b

Two senior campaign officials disclosed Mccain's decision a few hours before the Republican presidential nominee-to-be and his newly-minted running mate appeared at a rally in swing-state Ohio.
Palin is a self-styled hockey mom and political reformer who has been governor of her state less than two years.
Palin's selection shocked numerous Republican officials.
In making his pick, Mccain passed over several more prominent prospects who had figured in speculation for months — Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge among them.
At 44, Palin is a generation younger that Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, who is Barack Obama's running mate on the Democratic ticket.
She is three years Obama's junior, as well — and McCain has made much in recent weeks of Obama's relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters.
Palin flew overnight to an airport in Ohio near Dayton, and even as she awaited her formal introduction, some aides said they had believed she was at home in Alaska.
She is a former mayor of Wasilla who became governor of her state in December, 2006 after ousting a governor of her own party in a primary and then dispatching a former governor in the general election.
More recently, she has come under the scrutiny of an investigation by the Republican-controlled legislature into the possibility that she ordered the dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner because he would not fire her former brother-in-law as a state trooper.

Pre-gubernatorial political experience

Palin served two terms on the Wasilla City Council from 1992 to 1996. In 1996, she challenged the incumbent mayor, criticizing wasteful spending and high taxes. The ex-mayor and sheriff tried to organize a recall campaign, but failed. Palin kept her campaign promises by reducing her own salary, as well as reducing property taxes by 60%. She ran for reelection against the former mayor in 1999, winning by an even larger margin. Palin was also elected president of the Alaska Conference of Mayors.

In 2002, Palin made an unsuccessful bid for Lieutenant Governor, coming in second to Loren Leman in a four-way race. After Frank Murkowski resigned from his long-held U.S. Senate seat in mid-term to become governor, Palin interviewed to be his possible successor. Instead, Murkowski appointed his daughter, then-Alaska State Representative Lisa Murkowski.

Governor Murkowski appointed Palin Ethics Commissioner of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, where she served from 2003 to 2004 until resigning in protest over what she called the "lack of ethics" of fellow Alaskan Republican leaders, who ignored her whistleblowing complaints of legal violations and conflicts of interest. After she resigned, she exposed the state Republican party's chairman, Randy Ruedrich, one of her fellow Oil & Gas commissioners, who was accused of doing work for the party on public time, and supplying a lobbyist with a sensitive e-mail. Palin filed formal complaints against both Ruedrich and former Alaska Attorney General Gregg Renkes, who both resigned; Ruedrich paid a record $12,000 fine.
Governorship

In 2006, Palin, running on a clean-government campaign, executed an upset victory over then-Gov. Murkowski in the Republican gubernatorial primary. Despite the lack of support from party leaders and being outspent by her Democratic opponent, she went on to win the general election in November 2006, defeating former Governor Tony Knowles. Palin said in 2006 that education, public safety, and transportation would be three cornerstones of her administration.

When elected, Palin became the first woman to be Alaska's governor, and the youngest governor in Alaskan history at 42 years of age upon taking office. Palin was also the first Alaskan governor born after Alaska achieved U.S. statehood. She was also the first Alaskan governor not to be inaugurated in Juneau, instead choosing to hold her inauguration ceremony in Fairbanks. She took office on December 4, 2006.

Highlights of Governor Palin's tenure include a successful push for an ethics bill, and also shelving pork-barrel projects supported by fellow Republicans. Palin successfully killed the Bridge to Nowhere project that had become a nationwide symbol of wasteful earmark spending. "Alaska needs to be self-sufficient, she says, instead of relying heavily on 'federal dollars,' as the state does today."

She has challenged the state's Republican leaders, helping to launch a campaign by Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell to unseat U.S. Congressman Don Young and publicly challenging Senator Ted Stevens to come clean about the federal investigation into his financial dealings.

In 2007, Palin had an approval rating often in the 90s. A poll published by Hays Research on July 28, 2008 showed Palin's approval rating at 80%.
Energy policies

Palin's tenure is noted for her independence from big oil companies, while still promoting resource development. Palin has announced plans to create a new sub-cabinet group of advisors, to address climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions within Alaska.

Shortly after taking office, Palin rescinded an appointment by Murkowski of his former chief of staff Jim Clark to the Alaska Natural Gas Development Authority, one of thirty-five appointments made by Murkowski in the last hour of his administration that she reversed. Clark later pled guilty to conspiring with a defunct oil-field-services company to channel money into Frank Murkowski's re-election campaign.

In March 2007, Palin presented the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act (AGIA) as the new legal vehicle for building a natural gas pipeline from the state's North Slope. Only one legislator, Representative Ralph Samuels, voted against the measure, and in June Palin signed it into law. On January 5, 2008, Palin announced that a Canadian company, Transcanada, was the sole AGIA-compliant applicant.

In response to high oil and gas prices, and in response to the resulting state government budget surplus, Palin proposed giving Alaskans $100-a-month energy debit cards. She also proposed providing grants to electrical utilities so that they would reduce customers' rates. She subsequently dropped the debit card proposal, and in its place she proposed to send Alaskans $1,200 directly and eliminate the gas tax.
Social issues

Palin is strongly pro-life and belongs to Feminists for Life.

While the previous administration did not implement same-sex benefits, Palin complied with a state Supreme Court order and signed them into law. She supported a democratic advisory vote from the public on whether there should be a constitutional amendment on the matter.pro-life and belongs to Feminists for Life. She opposes same-sex marriage, but she has stated that she has gay friends and is receptive to gay and lesbian concerns about discrimination. Alaska was one of the first U.S. states to pass a constitutional ban on gay marriage, in 1998, along with Hawaii.

Palin's first veto was used to block legislation that would have barred the state from granting benefits to the partners of gay state employees. In effect, her veto granted State of Alaska benefits to same-sex couples. The veto occurred after Palin consulted with Alaska's attorney general on the constitutionality of the legislation.
Budget

In the first days of her administration, Palin followed through on a campaign promise to sell the Westwind II jet purchased (on a state government credit account) by the Murkowski administration. The state placed the jet for sale on eBay three times. In August 2007, the jet was sold for $2.7 million.

Shortly after becoming governor, Palin canceled an 11-mile (18-kilometer) gravel road outside of Juneau to a mine. This reversed a decision made in the closing days or hours of the Murkowski Administration.

In June 2007, Palin signed into law the largest operating budget in Alaska's history ($6.6 billion). At the same time, she used her veto power to make the second-largest cuts of the construction budget in state history. The US$237 million in cuts represented over 300 local projects, and reduced the construction budget to nearly US$1.6 billion.

PS - She is a Lifetime Member of the National Rifle Association, a hunter, a mother of five, and married to an Alaska Native. She's has a far better background then Barack Hussein Obama. :bravo:

Shara Palin's son, Track Palin is currently serving in a Styker Brigade with the US Army and will be deployed to Iraq September 2008.

On a side note, John McCain's son, Jimmy McCain also has served in Iraq with the United States Marine Corps.

I think its a terrible choice (for McCain)...Obama meanwhile is cheering.

1. First of all, Remember how Obama lacked experiance? The issue is Gone. She has even LESS experiance than Obama. No National experiance AT ALL. One year in office as Governor that's it. McCain just blunted his biggest and most accurate attack on Obama.

2. If McCain thinks he is going to woo away Hilary supporters because Palin is a women? Wait until they hear about McCain's/Palin Bomb Iran, pro-life, anti-environment, practically ALL the issues women support she is against. The moment those LIBERAL Hillary people see what she is a social conservative in heels, they will run for the hills. This is simply a pipe-dream.

3. Is involved in a nasty scandal where she fired a public commissioner who refused to fire her a state trooper (her ex-brother in law) who was involved in a custody battle with Palin's sister. Does she really think Obama wont bring this up?

4. She offers nothing to the campaign. Alaska is already RED state. An very corrupt state which brought us scandals such as "bridges to nowhere".

5. And remember she has to face an expert Joe Biden in a debate. She is going to get schooled.

If McCain wanted to nominate a conservative women he would have done better with Elisabeth Dole who is much more experienced. What McCain has done is to reelect Dan Qualyle, all looks, no brains (meaning experiance not smarts).

Big difference, she has run a Government. Both Obama and Biden have been Senators. They have not run actual governments. They have not been heads of state. She's been a member of the City Council, Mayor, and and Governor.

Well in that case neither has John McCain (hes never run a government neither)...

Furthermore Only one Year! That hardly counts, thats like little league baseball in politics.

And she has ZERO National Experience. At least Obama spent 10 years as a state senator, and 4 as a US senator.

Obama has more overall experience period. A Stupid, stupid choice.

Yeah 146 active days of voting in the Legislative branch should be enough to be at the top of the Executive branch, now shouldn't it?

Its FAR better than someone who has never held office outside Alaska and only for 1 year at that. By nominating Palin, McCain has invalidated the only ACCURATE criticism of Obama. Which means that the GOP will go back to its traditional tactics. Lies, Smear, and Dirty tricks.

And by the way do you know who else served 7 years in Illinois state (Obama served 10) legislature and only a 1 term Illinois US senator? Abraham Lincoln.

This is a pathetic attempt to win over Hillary supports, which wont work because they are far-left liberals and McCain would take the woman's rights movement back 20 years. McCain has forgotten how FOOLISH Mondale looked when he nominated a know-nothing like Geraldine Ferro. Funny how history repeats itself.

You're kidding! B.O. has so many holes that he's nothing but an empty suit. I'm only surprised at how many people refuse to see through the hype. Well, maybe it's because there is nothing to see but hype.
Yes indeed, it is shaping up to be an interesing run to the White House.

Oh BTW, welcome aboard believers in the right to life.

No matter how you look at it, come November, there will be a minority in the White House. Progress, don't you love it.

Here the thing. Despite all the rhetoric and hyperbole nobody really knows what we are going to get with Obama as president. Hes a populist outsider with little experience or record. That can be either good (Lincoln) or bad (Bush).

But you know exactly what you'll get with a McCain presidency, because his platform is the same as the past 30 years. Its the same one that started with Berry Goldwater and it hasn't worked ONCE. People aren't sure about Obama, but they damn well know McCain.

Thats the who idea behind "CHANGE", you can either think everything is rosy right now in which case vote McCain, or you can vote for a change.
Most people think things are rather bad right now, although McCain himself doesnt. He consistant shows how out-of-touch he is. For example, He thinks being Rich is making over $5 Million. Most Americans dont make 6 figure salaries let alone 7. And he himself doesnt know how many houses he owns. If McCain wanted to steal Democrats he should have picked Lieberman, Lieberman is far more liked amongst Dems than Sarah Palin is.

Democrats will not vote for a social conservative in any significant number. Take abortion since you mention it, with 70% of Americans support abortion rights thats a losing issue for the GOP. It would be as stupid as the Democrats running a repeal 2nd amendment platform. Its election suicide, it would guerentee a election loss.

Not a great choice...

As McCain's commercial goes, Washington is broken and he knows it. So let's vote for the guy who supports the broken Washington...

I'd rather vote for her than Obama or McCain. From what little I've read so far, the only thing I can see that I disagree on is her pro-life stance. Call me pro-abortion if you want, but the government should have absolutely NO say in what goes on in your womb.

Nor does anyone know exactly what you'll get with a Obama presidency. If you can pin that down thru all the yada, yada, yada Change, blah, blah Better Nation, yadda yaddadadadadadada the world will like us again. Blah Blah social change, more change, the world will not hate us anymore, stuff that keeps coming out of the Dem camp. Well good for you. But get ready to reinterpert next week cause thats about the change cycle.

I'm not prepared to drink from Obamas vat o' kool aid yet, probably won't ever be.

What I want is solid answers and solid platforms. But I'm probably hoping in vain and will have to put up the smoke and mirriors.

I believe that you're taking words out of context. mmarsh SAID that you don't know what you're getting with Obama, but it's bound to be better than McCain...

I know what he's saying. I comprehend it just fine. I also know what I'm saying. As of yet to me there is no substance to B.H.O. .

For what it is worth, here is an example of heart-felt friendly advice published a couple of days ago.

Letter of the Day:-

There might be a fresh political wind blowing across the US, but in Britain we've already experienced change and learned that it comes at a price. ("Grand political rhetoric is now the language of the snake oil salesman" Aug 27).

Tony Blair came to power promising to blow away the cob-webs of Tory rule. He promised a corruption-free government, a health service to be proud of, and education, education, education.

But he left us with more illiterate school-leavers, people dying through lack of drugs, two million people without an NHS dentist, immigration out of control, and an economy on the verge of bankruptcy.

So when the American people go to the polls they should remember that change isn't always the solution to the social ills of a nation.

SV - Birmingham.

( just one man's published warning, which matches my own of a few month's ago; the snake-oil salesmen really sold us down the river in our case. )
