This certainly is doable unfortunately it seems as if the U.S. is not in any hurry or has any real motivation to pursue it at max speed. It's sad but I think only a major conflict/war would force the U.S. (and maybe the world altogether) to pursue research into seriously feasible oil alternatives. If you take a look at the major advances in technology in the U.S., most of them have come out of war. For example, the current War on Terror has driven technological advances in robotics to a whole new level in the U.S. The Cold War drew advances in avionics.
