Bullet found in doorway
By David Williams

LETHAL: The .22 calibre bullet found in Walthamstow High Street on a market day morning (D6W1001)
LIVE ammunition has been found lying in the doorway of a busy high street shop.

The .22 calibre short round bullet was found at the entrance of the 99p Stores in Walthamstow High Street on Wednesday morning, November 1.

Haroon Khan, who has a firearms licence and is a member of a local gun club, was alarmed to discover live ammunition in a Walthamstow doorway.

The bullet, of Swiss origin, was still in its brass casing, complete with enough gunpowder for it to fire itself.

continued...
Mr Khan said that if it had been struck hard enough or exposed to heat it could have gone off.

"This sort of thing should not be lying around. It was live, primed and active," he said. "But rather me pick it up than a little kid.

"How can you feel safe when you are finding things like this on the street?

"To get hold of one of these is not easy. You have to go through a scrutinised search, you need a licence and you have to belong to a club."

Ammunition of this kind would ordinarily be used in a small handgun or pistol, and both can be owned legally under licence.

But to leave strictly controlled goods out in the street would be enough for a firearms licence to be revoked.

The bullet has been examined at a Metropolitan Police laboratory and details about it kept for future reference.

A police spokesman said: "Recovering firearms and ammunition is a priority for the police. We take the same view of ammunition as we do of a gun.

"If it goes bang, it is still lethal."

Police are treating the unattended ammunition as a crime. Mr Khan alerted them at 10.16am, and they arrived at his shop to pick up the bullet at 11.32am.

Is this exactly the way that the "ANTI-GUNNERS from here want us to be also?

It's a freaking .22 short. For those of you that have no clue what a .22 short is. It was a round used in rifles and pistols for arcade shooting and hunting small critters like small mice and such.

.22 is not the worst piece of ammo that can be found - I would seriously worry if it was a 5.56 or 7.62mm laying around.

While being a kid my mates and I used to target practice with .22 in the alley and in the garden - no one raised an eyebrowse as long as the muzzle was pointed at the targets (read the neighbours cats...) Hey we even had live ammo with us at school to show off for the rest of our friends and none of the teachers did anything except to tell us to keep the ammo in the bags, no police and EOD/STING to come around to PUCA it...

Times are changing, I guess...

Is this a joke????

I know it isn't a joke but it is these misconceptions right here that lead to people fearing something more than they should.

If finding a .22 round makes you feel unsafe you should probably re-think your entire life.

A crime, they took it to a lab, my god to think the waste of time and money while someone was probably getting strangled somewhere.....

Before I forget, a round by itself cannot be fired as a normal projectile. Since the cartridge isn't in an enclosed space. Like the chamber of a firearm. The Bullet and casing will simply seperate with a loud pop. I do it all the time while camping. I throw a stary round into the fire and you hear a loud pop. No danger or damage. Just some startled campers next to you while you laugh your ass off.

But once again, the idea of liberalism and it's after effects is shown in my once proud ally of England.
