ROME: An Italian F-16 fighter jet crashed in the sea in heavy winds off the coast of Sicily but the pilot has been found safe and sound, ANSA reported.

The aircraft plunged into the Mediterranean at around 8:00 pm (0030 IST) around 30 kilometres west of Sicily near the island of Levanzo, officials from the Sicilian port of Trapani said.

Coastguards plucked the pilot out of the water soon afterwards and he is in "good health," the Italian army air force said.

The aircraft, based in Trapani, was taking part in night exercises in strong winds when it disappeared off radar screens.
