I never intended it as a political jibe, just an equipment observation. I just think that a nation who has a vast hodge-podge of different bits and pieces is very reflective of their government/economy/culture.

Well, honestly until late 1980s, the equipments used in the Iranian armed forces were almost western ones (British tanks, navy frigates, American jets, missiles and choppers or French navy vessels, German rifles,....etc ) and by the end of the 1980s when the war with Iraq was over and arms embargo started taking its toll on the armed forces, the new regime purchased Russian and Chinese stuff since they were the only equipments they could buy.

Thats why you might have seen the different pieces you mentioned. New tanks and fighter jets from Russia, France and China, short range missiles from North Korea....
