if you read the comparison between the two the have several diff barrel lengths up to 20''

Like I told another member earlier, there's a new invention out that they're calling a "period." Sounds pretty interesting, I would look into it if I were you, 1328.

And like 1217 said, if you read the whole topic, we have spent much time on the barrel length already, with its pros and cons listed and discussed.

If the barrel is 12.5 inchs would it have a less effective range of the M-4 I really cant comment on the rifle because i have never heard about it.

Muzzle Velocity:
XM8:
3005 feet/second (M855 Ball) with 20" barrel
2675 feet/second with 12.5" barrel
2365 feet/second with 9.0" barrel

M16/A2:
3,100 feet/second

Now that's not what I wanted to hear...

According to this the 20" version will be outperformed by the m-16! I hope these numers aren't right...
