“Forgotten Empire” Opens in British Museum

The exhibition on the Achaemenid Empire is officially inaugurated today (8 September) in the British Museum.

Tehran, 8 September 2005 (CHN) – “Forgotten Empire: the World of Ancient Persia” opens today 6 pm local London time in the British Museum with Iranian officials attending.

The Iranian officials taking part in the opening ceremony include the newly appointed Director of Iran’s Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization, Esfandiar Rahim Mashayi, and directors of Iran’s National Museum, Sadaabad, and Niavaran Museum-Palaces, along with some other Iranian cultural experts and officials.

The exhibition which runs through to 8 January 2006 showcases artifacts introducing the Achaemenid culture, art, politics, social conditions, economy, and civilization on loan from Iran’s National Museum, Louvre, Paris, and from the collection of the British Museum itself.

The preliminary works to prepare for the event started two years ago between the British Museum, represented by John Curtis, the Keeper of the Ancient Near East department at the British Museum, and officials of Iran’s National Museum.

Despite some serious opposition by Iranian officials in the recent months against loaning the objects to England, a permission issued by the Iranian government during President Khatami finally resolved the matter and the pieces left for London, arriving there safe and sound for the exhibition.

In return for the generous loan from Iran, the British Museum has agreed to lend to Iran for two years the world famous Cyrus cylinder and its Jeihoun collection.

thats IS barbarious, and BAD, but what can we do...

well, that was how they got the strongest young men and became one of the most powerful city-state.

but another thing shows Sparta is nothing but a war machine is that this city state had no significant art or literature or architecture achievement unlike many other Greek city states.

First and only time we will ever agree.

lol....I hope not. Forum is about meeting great people from far away.
and nice to meet you.

I see. You are true. It was Athens which was concentrating on art and literature. Science and knowledge. But spartans where like madly in love with war or something..

To name one civilization or another the “greatest” simply isn’t possible. How can you compare Babylon with Rome when each at their prime, where at completely different times. When Babylon finally fell in 520 B.C. (B.C.E.) under the rule of Nidinta-bel, or King Nebuchadnezzar III, while Rome wasn’t even a world power until 30 A.D. (C.E.) with the time of the High Five Kings (Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus, and Marcus Aurelius). These five kings were the ones who helped guide Rome through her greatest time.

The rise of the Greek wasn’t until 478 B.C.(B.C.E.), and it lasted until 323 B.C. (B.C.E.) when Alexander the Great died. His father Phillip II had conquered Greece, and it became part of their domain. Alexander then used many Greek troops to wage his war.

The Celts where barbarians, but even so they ruled an empire for over a thousand years which consisted of most of western Europe. Their unique style of art and culture is quite beatiful, but art and beauty do not name one culture above another.

Britain had a very extensive empire throughout the world, but what have they now? What has any of the once great empires gained or loss from having the biggest piece of land at a certain time in history? Nothing. All the lands have been divided up into little countries, with some being big and most being small. Europe looks like a patch work quilt filled with people from the same orgins. Russia once was a country that could swallow smaller continents within it’s borders. But Communism brought the fall of that.

In our modern times there is no Empire, there isn’t one country that is trying to grab as much land as possible. But History repeats itself, and sooner or later one country will try to rise above all. Hitler and Stalin tried and failed because their tactics where designed by people who didn’t love them. In order to build an empire, this new emporer must be loved by the people, and as of yet, there is no one like that.

Can you compare one empire to another empire? Not unless you put them all together with everything the same, and see who wins. But we can’t do that so there is no point in arguing about it.

Fenris, if there were no point in arguing there wouldn't be much to post about here would there? I think people can make their cases for which civilization they think is best just fine thank you. It's called opinion not fact.

the wolf_fenris: Right you are in saying that it is difficult to compare two empires to each other, but to a point. In History there have been many times where one empire duked it out with another. Look at the Celts and Romans. You mentioned both of them, but what you failed to tell everyone is that the Celts and Romans fought each other until around 305 C.E. (I don’t know why you are using both date formats, you should really only use one, its easier). The Barbarian empire was very large, it stretched across most of western Europe, and the Roman’s where just entering the time when they started whooping butt and taking land.

Adolph Hitler, who you also mentioned, used a strategy similar to the Romans, using his Blitzkrieg, he moved like lightning conquering one country after another. The Romans used the same stuff with their armies. The most movable army in ancient times, lightly packed, trained to perfection, and they had cavalry. They moved from one country or region to another, quickly pushing the barbarians all the way up to the farther reaches of England. So I guess that if you do put two empires facing each other, all that matters are they’re armies.

Some say the Mongols had the best cavalry in all of history. Not to sure about the other types of technology besides the improvements they made on the bow and arrow.

When you take land mass into consideration the old British Empire would have won hands down. Just look at size of Canada, then add other continents like India and Ausrtalia then stir in large chunks of Africa and that is not counting in places like New Zealand , Jamaica, Egypt ,Persia, Iraq. Palestine, and the Sudan, at one time we were looking after the Old Ottam Empire as well.

The monglos did have an intiguing cavalry indeed. About England, yeah, I agree with LeEnfield. But still, it wasnt very strong if u know what I mean. And it wasnt just in one time period. English in North America during the 18century did suffer..

I believe the Mongols beat the British Empire by a long shot. Russia, China, India (including Pakistan) and parts of Southwest Asia, basically the entire Asian continent as well as parts of Europe, almost the whole of continental Europe if not for the timely death of Genghis Kahn.

Just a few things I wanted to point out.
Britain was the largest empire in history, though the Mongolian empire was the largest contingent empire. Also the Hamburger itself is an American invention. Though the Hamburg steak originated in Germany.

Now, I think personally the Roman empire was the greatest. Latin is the foundation of English,Spanish,French,Portuguese, and Romanian.
They established a vast infrastructure system, importing more water into Rome daily than Manhattan Island, using just stone aqueducts. They established bath houses, sewage systems, and public sanitation.
They made roads, and built architecture that today would be difficult to build, and seemingly impossible with the tools they used, for example, building the Parthenon. They created concrete as well, a vital material in construction, as well as the arch.Rome was the first city to gain a population of a million people, which takes strong infrastructure.
Established vast trade networks and gave freedom to many people to trade openly.
They lasted nearly two-thousand years, and when they collapsed, civilization in europe took a huge step backwards. Even after Western Rome collapse, it still influenced Europe for thousands of years. Rome became the center of Christianity, and then Rome itself, and ancient greece, influenced the beginning of the Renaissance which saw a revitalization in Europe from the Dark Ages.
Just my 2 cents. :)
