THE GREATEST MILLITARY POWER IN HISTORY ...would be the united states air force....basically....united states is stronger than alot of countries....okay....a vast majority
This is a controversial issue. US military is most high-tech but not the best in human history and it is not capable of major conquests.

British managed to colonize 60% of world lands with its military power and the Mongols also did a huge conquest by defeating strong civilizations in its time.

Mongols had the best military might in human history in terms of victories and achievements.

Did any one mention PERSIAN EMPIRE here?

Interesting choice...

The Persian Empire began around 700 BC and a lot of Iranians would claim that it has continued until modern times. (though is certainly hasn't been a continuous empire). The majority of Iranians are still ethnic "Persians" and speak the same language that has not changed greatly in 2500 years. (if you speak to Iranians in Western countries that fled when the Shah was overthrown in 1979, many of whom were Christian, they will often refer to themselves as Persian)

Here are a few facts and firsts:

The world's first "Charter of Human Rights" was setup by Cyrus the Great in 539 BC. (Predating Magna Carter and US Civil War)
Conquered peoples were given full citizenship rights and revolt was very rare.

The Persians developed an advanced postal service that was available to all of its citizens.

By Darius' time, their empire included the entire Middle East, Egypt and extended from Thrace in Europe through to the Indus Valley in Central Asia.

The Persians were the first to setup permanent road systems - as both trade routes and methods for moving armies quickly around the empire.

They made big strides in the development of engineering and building, medicine, art, philosophy and economics.

The problem with the Persian Empire:

There was no real continuity - Persia was ruled by Greeks, Parthians, Sassanians, Arabian, Mongols, Safavids, Russians and even the British. It wasn't one empire but a series of empires sometimes ruled by Persians and at other times by outsiders.

They were beaten up by just about every other empire and their military proved to be outdone by far lesser numbers time and again.

In effect, the first Persian empire only lasted 300 years (up until 330BC when Alexander conquered the entire empire)

As I said, interesting choice but I think the Romans fared better.

Persia was ruled by some outsiders but those outsiders were defeated al the time or merged in our rich culture.

BTW, Parthians, Sasanids, Safavids were truly Iranian/Persian.

British and Russians never had a chance to rule us like a colony of their own. They were always rejected.

The only time a far lesser number could defeat the Persian armies was in Marathon but we shouldnt ignore the fact that Persians ruled the biggest empire of the history for at least 10 centuries. (Greeks were included) ;-)

And Alexandre burnt our nice cities while Persian kings used to help foreigners build their cities and avoid bloodshed.

Romans sure do stand in the forefront.

An interesting one to throw into the mix might be Imperialist England, they did more to globalize and modernize the world than anyone.

And of course I can't leave out my native country, we Americans are so awsome :p
Its hard because the world went from Egypt, to Greece, to Rome, to Italy, to Spain, to England, to USA and thats just the "West", not including the Muslims, Indians (Actually from India) and Asia as a whole.

Romans...they never lasted. It had a west and and eastern one. The eastern which was called Byzantine, and its capital was constantinople, was conquered and fell....

All civilizations have some great achievements, but few civilization can survivie for a long time.

Thus, I think the greatest are those who can survive. That leaves India, Egypt and China.

Yeah they only lasted what? About 2000 years? Appx. 500 B.C. until the Byzantine Empire fell in 1453 to be exact. :sarc:

And if anybody thinks Rome has vanished I suggest they take another look at architecture, science, medicine, language (haven't heard many people speaking ancient Persian lately but Latin roots are in all Western languages), government, literature, etc., etc., etc. ;)

spartans? they were good honorable and capable warriors. They never feared anything..

Havent u heard.."A spartan comes home with his shield or upon it", now thats quite a something..

Yeh the spartans had a good military but it was the first facist city state as well.

it cannot be even called a civilization...

it is just a part of whole Greek City states civilization..

by the way....Spartas left nothing (art, literature) except a model of facist state.
