BERLIN (AP) - New German Chancellor Angela Merkel vowed to strengthen relations with the United States and smaller EU nations in remarks released Sunday, a day before her top diplomat heads for Washington.

In an interview with Focus magazine, Merkel also suggested the close links with Russia pursued by her predecessor, Gerhard Schroeder, were a lower priority for the new government.
Get Sarkozy to replace Chirac, and maybe US would be back in business with Old Europe again.

This sweet song will probably last just as long as she can gain from it. Politics remain politics and Europe and the US like to pick a fight over "something" when they have got an acute crisis somewhere. Be it banana's or steel.... they'll think of something to cross daggers for!

Let Sarkozy to replace Chirac, and maybe US would be back in business with Old Europe again.

You do understand that Chirac, De Villepin, and Sarkozy are all from the same party? Sarkozy's popularity took a hit during the riots (his comment about want to wash the minority areas out with a fire hose didnt go very well with the minorities. But, barring any unforseen calamity chances are good he will be the next president.

Personally I find Merkel Statements odd. Schroeder was supposed to be the pro-US politican.
