"Futsal is a variant of association football that is mainly played indoors. Its name is derived from the Portuguese fut ebol de sal ão and the Spanish fút bol sal a/de sal ón, which can be translated as 'salon football'. In Madrid 1985 the name fútbol de saló and all other names the game was called were changed officially and internationally into FUTSAL.
Futsal is played between two teams of five players, one of whom is the goalkeeper, and up to seven substitutes per team. Unlike some other forms of indoor football, the game is played on a hard court surface delimited by lines; walls or boards are not used. Futsal is also played with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regulation football. The rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces.

As international governing bodies of futsal, FIFA and AMF are responsible for maintaining and promulgating the official rules of their respective versions of futsal. Like football, futsal has 'laws' that define all aspects of the game, including what may be changed to suit local competitions and leagues. There are seventeen laws in the Futsal Laws of the Game.

Futsal has recently become very big here in my home town with teams playing from 5 year olds to Old "fuddy dudgers".

Where i live, we have a very high community participation in over 30 sports and pastimes. Through the summer basketball is played 5 nights a week for 3 hours on up to 8 courts just to get all of the teams through. Our town population is barely 2000 people.

Futsal is only in it's first season here, and is promoted as "Indoor soccer" as no one had ever heard of Futsal, when first advertised it got almost no participants but once they explained that it was indoor soccer, it took off, slowly at first, but gaining support by the day.

We only have one World class floor, and two really good second class sprung floors, they are all used for the five age groups once a week and it attracts quite a good following, especially groups 4 and 5 as they tend to get pretty serious, even the "Oldies". This really surprised me as Soccer is only very poorly patronised in this area, and that is only among the shool aged kids, there is no adult soccer.

I think that it will become the winter indoor sport of choice here within a few years. There already seems to be a really great social atmosphere growing among the participants and followers.



This is the first class floor, you will notice that it has better lighting than the photo in my last post.

Here we have the 13 to 18 year old mixed teams, with my next door neighbour's daughter in Yellow team shown here. This category gets a great following as the boys and girls get to "mix it" on court. many of the boys have learnt not to underestimate the skill and drive of these girls with more than one being set on his bum occasionally.

People.. I bet in a couple of years Futsal popularity will grow much, its a very fast pace exciting sport for all ages, can be played with any weather around!
