Reuters - FBI investigations using telecommunications companies' records of terrorism suspects have gone farther than previously acknowledged, including information on phone call and e-mail patterns of the suspects' associates, The New York Times reported in Sunday editions.

Its depends.

The question with this sort of thing is what kind of oversight the FBI is under.

Do we all remember J Edgar Hoover? This guy was living proof about living in a police state and what happens when there is no FBI oversight. The man had tabs on just about everybody, and thats not good at all.
