The Zero was a nimble firhter plane, BUT there was no armour on the plane and no self sealing fuel tanks to save weight, which meant once the Zero had been hit a few times it was destroyed along with the pilot. Once America had got it's act together and brought out some better planes then the Zero was fairly easy prey.
One of the fastest piston aircraft was the British Sea Fury which even claimed to have shot down the first Mig 15 in the Korea
