People who have bought homes near Fort Worth Alliance Airport have to expect that, from time to time, they're going to hear some aircraft noise. The airport, which opened in 1989, was there long before most of the homes that are now its neighbors.
That said, a proposal to begin training pilots from the United Arab Emirates to fly jet fighters at Alliance will change the noise contours around the airport. It's understandable that some of those homeowners are not happy.
Still, a U.S. Air Force study shows that the increase in noise is expected to be slight -- and tolerable. Homeowners can still register their objections with the Air Force if they wish, but count us in favor of moving this flight training plan forward.
What's the plan?
The UAE is an important U.S. ally in the Middle East. In 2000, the emirates signed a contract to buy 80 F-16 fighters and associated equipment built in Fort Worth by Lockheed Martin Corp. The last of the planes in that $6.4 billion deal was delivered last year.
