nvestigation - Military officials say Maj. Greg Young became disoriented, which led to his fatal dogfight crash
Saturday, September 22, 2007DAVID AUSTIN
The Oregonian Staff
Oregon Air National Guard Maj. Greg Young pulled back on the stick of his F-15A fighter and climbed to the right, three seconds before 1:30 on the clear June day.
The aircraft soared to 18,800 feet before cutting back to the right and plunging toward the two F/A-18 Hornets that had lined up Young's wingman in their sights. Fifty-five seconds later, Young was dead. The pilot from St. Helens died instantly when his sleek, $32 million jet slammed into the Pacific Ocean at 632 mph.
On Friday, U.S. Air Force and military officials released their findings in a report that says Young, 34, experienced "unrecognized spatial disorientation," which led to the June 26 crash. Young and another Air National Guard pilot had squared off against two pilots from Texas who were training in Oregon.
