What are the statistics for the deaths and casualties from Rome to the surrender in Italy? Especially the Gothic Line campaign.

I am trying to get a handle on how many people paid the price for Mark Clark's decision to "take" Rome and let the German army escape.

If you add to that the casualties at Anzio, Monte Cassino, and the Rapido River - who's sacrifices he squandered - then he has to be one of the worst WW2 commanders.

I just want to get an idea of the scope of the decision.

I can't understand why the allies didn't make their major goal the capture of Antwerp. After Patton secured the southern flank all resources should have been towards getting a port to save needing the Red Ball Express. Surely it was not just Eisenhower playing politics and keeping Patton and Monty happy by having a broad front. It is so obviously the main goal after D-day but even when they later captured the port in pretty good condition Monty still did not clear both sides of the river so ships could use it, for some time.

Soviet female fighter pilots of the Second World War

Female aviation units in Russia excelled and one was even the most decorated regiment in the whole soviet air force. How much did women contribute to the fighting of the war, and why isn’t more written about it, considering how popular women’s history is these days?
