I am trying to get a handle on how many people paid the price for Mark Clark's decision to "take" Rome and let the German army escape.

If you add to that the casualties at Anzio, Monte Cassino, and the Rapido River - who's sacrifices he squandered - then he has to be one of the worst WW2 commanders.

After Patton secured the southern flank all resources should have been towards getting a port to save needing the Red Ball Express. Surely it was not just Eisenhower playing politics and keeping Patton and Monty happy by having a broad front.
