KALININGRAD, November 17 (RIA Novosti) - A Russian shipyard will float out the first of three frigates for India's Navy November 27, a company spokesman said Tuesday.

Image: http://en.beta.rian.ru/images/15688/02/156880213.jpg

The Yantar shipyard in Russia's Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad is building three Project 11356 modified Krivak III class (also known as Talwar class) guided missile frigates for the Indian Navy under a $1.6 billion contract signed in July, 2006.

"The frigate is due to be floated out on November 27," Sergei Mikhailov said.

He previously said sea trials would not start right away because "post-construction work" was still to be carried out. The trials should start in 2010, he said.

The shipyard is to deliver the last warship to India in 2011-2012.

He did not indicate exactly when the first frigate would be complete and handed over to India.

In an interview with RIA Novosti, Yantar's Director Igor Orlov said the shipyard was currently in talks with Russia's Vnesheconombank on "a $60 million loan to complete the construction of the three frigates for the Indian Navy."

The Talwar-class frigate has deadweight capacity of 4,000 metric tons and a speed of 30 knots, and is capable of accomplishing a wide range of naval missions, primarily hunting down and destroying large surface ships and submarines.

Russia has previously built three Talwar class frigates for India - the INS Talwar (from the Hindi language meaning Sword), the INS Trishul (Trident), and the INS Tabar (Axe).

Indian President Pratibha Patil has named the new ships the Teg (Saber), the Tarkash (Quiver), and the Trikand (Bow).

All the new frigates will be armed with eight BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles rather than 3M-54E Klub-N anti-ship missiles that were installed on previous frigates.

They will be also equipped with a 100-mm gun, a Shtil surface-to-air missile system, two Kashtan air-defense gun/missile systems, two twin 533-mm torpedo launchers, and an anti-submarine warfare helicopter.

Major Hasan Embraces Tradition

November 12, 2009: Major Nidal Malik Hasan's murder of 13 people at Fort Hood on November 5th was the act of an Islamic terrorist. The U.S. government is trying to explain it as just the act of a lone madman, but that's what terrorist attacks often are. Moreover, to try and depict Hasan's act as anything but Islamic terrorism ignores Islamic history. One should also note that Islamic terrorists worldwide are hailing the massacre as an act of Islamic terrorism. Who are you going to believe? Try believing history.
The main recruiter for Islamic terrorism has always been conservative Islamic clerics, especially in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. The Saudi brand of Islam, Wahhabism, has always stressed hatred for infidels (non-Moslems) and forcible conversion of everyone, everywhere, to Islam. Religious hatred is nothing new, but Wahhabism is practiced by many Saudis made rich by half a century of increasing oil wealth. Everyone is urged to join the struggle ("jihad") for making the world Moslem. You can do this as part of a group, or, as Nidal Hasan did, as an individual.

This radicalism comes along every few generations. By the 1980s, many Moslems had become disillusioned with socialism and democracy. All along, Islamic conservatives had been suggesting the “Islamic way.” This meant using Islam as a form of government, as well as a religion. This is how Islam worked back in the beginning. Unfortunately, it didn’t work back then. This failure was explained away (as someone else’s fault, or not doing it right, take your pick). And so began the popularity of radical Islam. When you’re on a mission from God, the ends justify the means. It was a small step from accepting the need for an Islamic form of government, and then getting behind terrorism in the name of God. Besides, Arab armies had not been able to defeat infidel armies for a long, long time. Terrorism and the pure hearts of suicidal Islamic warriors would have to do.

True believers selectively pick out Islamic teachings that favor their goals. Take, for example, the killing of Moslems. This is explained away by believing that any Moslem that does not agree with your radical view, is not a true Moslem and must be killed. Any Moslems who do agree with you, and get killed by your bomb anyway, are simply "involuntary martyrs." Most Moslems do not believe these twisted interpretations of the Koran, but are unwilling to step up and stop the radicals. Nearly all of the 3,500 Moslems in the U.S. military accept that there are evil Moslems out there, and have no qualms about killing them. They see Iraqi and Afghan Moslems doing the same thing.

So where's the problem? It's simply that Islamic radicals have always been a part of Islam. They have been the main reason for the backwardness of Islamic countries. A thousand years ago, it was the Islamic radicals who halted the work of Islamic scientists. This continues, with the current Islamic radicals opposing schools that don't put the main emphasis on religion, or teach girls at all. There are four times more women Nobel laureates from the West than Islamic laureates of any gender. Thus Islamic radicalism is tolerated in the Islamic community, as is Islamic terrorism, at least if it is only directed against kaffirs (non-Moslems).

Dreams of world conquest are also nothing new for Moslems either. Wahhabism demanded it, and pronounced the mission an order from God. Wahhabism also encouraged suicide missions, by assuring those who did a wonderful time in the afterlife. While Wahhabism (subsidized by the Saudi royal family, as a form of extortion payment to radical clerics) controlled the education of most young Saudis, what really got the Islamic revolution going was al Jazeera and the general failure of Arab society during the last half century. This combination of mass media and social failure is how religious hatred and terrorism became hugely popular throughout the Moslem world.

But one of the main inspirations for the current outbreak of Islamic terrorism is the failure of Arab, and to a lesser extent Moslem, society in the last half century. Actually, Islam has been an economic and political disaster for centuries. But for a long time colonialism and the Ottoman empire gave the Islamic world a comfortable excuse for their problems. But the Ottoman empire has been gone since 1918, and colonialism completely disappeared by the 1960s. Despite over a trillion dollars in oil wealth, and proximity to large markets for products, the Arab economies have gone downhill over the last half century. Political progress has been similarly retrograde, with tyrants and dictators being the most common form of government. Same with education, science and just about everything else. No progress. Except terrorism. Arab and Moslem terror is nothing new, it’s just gotten more press exposure in the last decade.

Arab nations have tried democracy, monarchy and socialism, but none of these has been able to cure the curse of corruption, tyranny and lack of economic progress. The Wahabi zealots of Saudi Arabia always held out another possibility; Islam. Not just prayer and a virtuous lifestyle, but forcing other Moslems, and non-Moslems, to practice Wahhabism as well. This religious solution only worked if everyone was converted. That would end the oppression of Moslems, as true Moslems do not oppress other Moslems. Wahhabism saw the non-Moslem world as inherently evil, and the Saudi kings always had a hard time introducing new technologies (like radio, TV and modern medicine) into the kingdom because of the opposition from Wahabi zealots who saw these Infidel inventions as un-Islamic and inherently evil.

Pakistan seems to have donned the role of a guinea pig-cum-promotion agent for China's arsenal experiments, as it is all set to buy at least 36 advanced fighter jets from China in a landmark deal for about $1.4 billion (Rs 6,500 crore), reported the Financial Times.

Pakistani officials confirmed the deal and said they might buy "larger numbers" of the J-10 fighter aircraft in the near future.

As part of the initial agreement, China will supply two squadrons of the fighter jets.

"This agreement should not simply be seen in the narrow context of Pakistan's relations with China," said Abdul Qayyum, a retired Pakistani general told the paper.

"There is a wider dimension. By sharing its advanced technology with Pakistan, China is also saying to the world that its defence capability is growing rapidly."

Though China has earlier supplied Pakistan with fighter jets, this is the first time that it is supplying advanced jets to Pakistan in such large numbers.

According to defence experts, it is not just a deal, but also Pakistan's stamp of approval on China's advancing military power and will help in increasing China's sales of the fighter jet.

"Countries like Iran and possibly some of the Middle Eastern countries would be keen to deal with China if they can find technology which is comparable to the west," said a western official in Islamabad [ Images ] told the paper.

"Pakistan will work as the laboratory to try out Chinese aircraft. If they work well with the Pakistani air force, others will follow," he added.

Over the years, Pakistan has spent billions buying fighter jets from leading military powers.

In the 1970s, it bought Mirage fighter jets from France [ Images ], and in the 80s, it turned to the US for F-16s. The Pakistani air force has at least 45 F-16s, and will receive 18 more of the upgraded version of F-16 and 12 of the older version from the US soon to be used in the war against the Taliban [ Images ].

China and Pakistan have also jointly built an advanced fighter jet, JF-17, commonly known as 'Thunder'. Pakistan also plans to buy at least 250 of the Thunder jets over the next few years.

While China has already come up with its indigenous aircraft, Pakistan will reportedly release its version of 'Thunder' in a few weeks.

The above cartoon shows the strategic importance of the US military base in Okinawa. However, at present, this island has become the headache of both Obama of the US and Hatoyama of Japan as local Japanese people are asking for their American buddies to leave. NO US BASE IN OKINAWA!Image: http://u.discuz.net/home/image/face/6.gif Image: http://u.discuz.net/home/image/face/6.gif

More than 21,000 Japanese gathered in the southern island of Okinawa on Sunday to demand that a US Marine base be moved out of the region, days ahead a visit by US president Barack Obama. Protesters asked the US troops to realign its military base and said that the military in Okinawa is a burden for the island.

Under a 2006 U.S.-Japan agreement, the Futenma Marine base in the center of the city of Ginowan is set to be closed and replaced with a facility built partly on reclaimed land at Henoko, a remoter part of the island, by 2014.

The deal, which Washington wants to push through after years of what a military official called "painful" negotiations, is part of a wider plan to re-organize U.S. troops and reduce the burden on Okinawa by moving up to 8,000 Marines to Guam.

The row over the re-siting of the Futenma air base threatens to stall a realignment of the 47,000 U.S. military personnel in Japan and sour defense ties between the two countries, seen as key in a region home to a rising China and an unpredictable North Korea.

It could also prove a domestic headache for Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, whose support ratings have slipped since his landslide election victory in August.

"Okinawa's future is for us, the Okinawan people to decide," Ginowan mayor Yoichi Iha told a supportive crowd which spilled out of an open-air theater by the beach. "We cannot let America decide for us."

TEL AVIV: Israel has signed a $1.1 billion contract to supply an upgraded tactical air defence system to India, with delivery expected by 2017,
an Israeli official said on Monday.

The sale of the Barak-8 systems came as India's army chief, General Deepak Kapoor, held high-level talks in Israel, India's biggest defence supplier.

Made by state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd., the Barak-8 is designed for use aboard ships and can shoot down incoming missiles, planes and drones. The most advanced version can be also deployed on land, the Israeli official said.

India has already acquired an earlier generation of the Barak system, the official said.

The Barak-8 contract was signed in April, and delivery of the systems will take place "over the next six to eight years".

The Indian embassy in Tel Aviv had no immediate comment.

Recent years have seen a flurry of orders for aircraft carriers by Japan, India, Australia, South Korea, Russia and China. The sudden focus on air capability at sea represents a paradigm change in the thinking of these states, and both communist and democratic governments appear to be on the same wavelength. Is this a harbinger of a new cold war in Asia?

Unresolved territorial disputes in East Asia, especially related to maritime boundaries, have resulted in the naval build-up by countries in the region. The discovery of oil and gas deposits in deep-sea locations around islands in the region has strengthened the importance of ownership claims.

Russia hold military match in Red Square to honor 1941 parade

Image: http://forum.globaltimes.cn/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=10617&d=1257734275

Russian soldiers in World War II Soviet uniform and other historical military costumes, accompanied by two famed T-34 tanks, marched through Moscow's Red Square on Saturday to mark the 68th anniversary of a legendary military parade in 1941.

About 4,000 young Muscovites also participated in the parade, watched by some 6,000 spectators, including at least 45 participants of the 1941 parade.

The Nov. 7, 1941 parade, which commemorated the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, was held after Russia joined World War II and aimed to raise morale as Nazi German forces approached Moscow. The troops headed straight to the front line outside Moscow after the parade.

The T-34 Soviet medium tank, often referred to as the best tank design of the war and appearing in the parade for the first time, was the backbone of the Red Army during World War II.

In order to commemorate the 92nd anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution, or the Great October Socialist Revolution, separate marches and rallies have been planned by communist and other left-wing groups in central Moscow and across the country.

Iran warns Russia over S-300 Deal

*IRAN WARNS RUSSIA OVER S-300 DEAL*

A senior Iranian lawmaker warns that any attempt by Moscow to back down on a deal to the deliver S-300 air defense system to Iran 'would run counter to Russia's interests'.

"The S-300 case, which is an old case, marks a new chapter in Russia's failure to keep its end of the deal," Iran's Parliament (Majlis) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Chief Alaeddin Boroujerdi told reporters on Sunday.

Boroujerdi was referring to a contract signed between the Tehran government and the Kremlin in 2007.

"Given the extensive bilateral cooperation between the two countries, it would run counter to Russia's interests if negotiations fail to bear fruit in this matter," the influential lawmaker added.

Iran has opted to acquire the sophisticated S-300 defense system in reaction to Israeli rhetoric against Tehran. The missile defense system, according to Western experts, would shield Iranian nuclear sites against any Israeli airstrike.

"If Tehran obtained the S-300, it would be a game-changer in military thinking for tackling Iran," says long-time Pentagon advisor Dan Goure.

The S-300 surface-to-air missile system can track targets and fire at aircraft 120 kilometers (75 miles) away. The system features high jamming immunity and is able to simultaneously engage up to 100 targets.

The Israeli officials have on numerous occasions expressed concern over the possibility of the system being delivered to Iran.

"The S-300 is a Russian-made surface-to-air missile system that is very advanced, with long ranges and many capabilities," Israeli Air Force (IAF) commander, Major General Ido Nehushtan said in September.

"We need to make every effort to stop this system from getting to places where the IAF needs to operate or may need to operate in the future," he added.

While Russia's Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation said in October that Moscow would fulfill its commitment according to its 'international obligations', there has been interminable confusion reigning over the delivery of the defense system.

Boroujerdi warned that should Russia fail to fulfill its promises regarding the S-300 missile system, 'a negative point in the two states' relations would emerge'.

In the afternoon of Nov 5, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, who’s about to be deployed to Iraq, killed 11 soldiers and wounded 31 others on Thursday afternoon at Fort Hood Military Base in Taxas. The gunman was then killed by police. According to the spokesman of Ford Base, Hasan was upset about his pending deployment these days and that may be the reason for shooting. Further investigation will be carried out immediately.

Quote:

Background information:

1) Shooting incidents in Ford Hood in the year 2008 and 2009.

Sep, 2008, a 21-year-old soldier shot his superior official and then killed himself.

Nov, 2009, a parolee from New York shot a medical official of Ford Hood.

Jul. 18, 2009, a soldier of Ford Hood killed his fellow from Wisconsin in a party.

Aug, 2009, a quarrel between two soldiers in a party accelerated to a gunfire and one innocent person was killed.

2) Afghan:
Five Britishi soldiers were killed by their Afghanistan fellow on Nov. 4, 2009.

3) Iraq:
May. 11, 2009, an soldier shot at his fellows and five were killed. The incident occurred in an American Army base in Baghdad. The gunman was arrested.

President Barack Obama on Thursday called a mass shooting at a Texas Army base "a horrific outburst of violence."

"We will make sure that we get answers to every single question about this horrible incident," the commander in chief said. "We are going to stay on this."

He said it's a tragedy to lose a soldier overseas and even more horrifying when they come under fire at an Army base on American soil.

Obama also said his thoughts and prayers are with the wounded and families of the fallen.

It can be infered from the background information that shooting incidents in Ford Hood is not accidental, at least in the past two years. Such a high rate of voilence in professional army is really unthinkable and unforgivable.

That’s take a deeper discussion on why did these soldiers point the gun at their fellows.

The Hasan incident happened yesterday is still under investigation but from the slice information released by Ford Hood, one thing can be sure, i.e. the gunman was upset about his pending deployment to Iraq.

Maybe he would not have to do so in the US, but there was a high probability that he would do the same once he was in Iraq, what what a soldier had done in May.

Not only in Iraq, soldiers who are now fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan or are going to fight there, more or less, have psychological fear or tension. The endless terrorist attack as well as ineffective military movements all put great pressure on them. Now, they do not only have to be careful about the attack from their enemies, but also from their fellows who once fight with them.

Of course, not all shooting incidents derived from the same reasons. However, I think that’s more horrible because you can not control in advance and prevent such tragedies from being happening.
