SPIRES Times Aerospace Writer shelby.spires@htimes.com Military looks to reduce reliance oncommercial firms The Pentagon would like to have more of its own spy satellites so it's not forced to rely on a commercial imaging company that also has to meet the demands of Google and Microsoft, the head of the U.S. Army Space & Missile Defense Command said Thursday. Increased wartime demand has created gaps in the availability of military satellites, said Army Lt. Gen. Kevin Campbell, commander of Redstone Arsenal's Space & Missile Defense Command. Today, about 80 percent of satellite intelligence and photos come from commercial space imaging companies and 20 percent from military satellites.
