This is a farfetched idea, this may seem like a good idea but, in all it isn't.

The only thing I can think of is that it is ball ammunition so most likely not armor piercing. Maybe set those up to set up a screen of lead to prevent rockets or morters from hitting the troops. They might be doing that with the phalanx I read.

Obviously discussion of aplication for the DREAD is premature since it's just a prototype right now. But from all indications the DREAD, as currently invisioned, would serve as a next generation machine gun. Applications like putting a DREAD on a HUMVW, as part of a crew-serviced infantry weapon, and part of a helicopter package.

It would be the ultimate anti-infantry weapon.


Of course all of this is speculation based on the implementation of a weapon that is more paper than reality. But I, for one, will be keeping my eye on this technology.
