I believe at one point her MOH was recalled or rescinded as it did not meet the criteria. She was not "in uniform" she attached herself to the Union Army as a kind of Contract Surgeon and there for was not eliligable for the award of the MOH. There is some speculation from CW Historians that it was awarded by her lover.

And any rate I believe someone reinstated the award for whatever politically expiediate reason.

Not to knock women in the service but Dr. Mary well you could pick a better example.
