AT CLOVIS ARMY AIR BASE in Clovis, N.M., during World War II, several of us, including the Catholic chaplain, were watching boxing matches at the base gymnasium. We noticed one boxer make the sign of the cross before answering the bell for the first round. An officer leaned over to the chaplain and asked, "Tell me, padre, does that really help?"

"It will," the chaplain said, "if he can fight."
