Post; Differences in Interpretation

AT THE WAC basic-training center at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, during World War II, my roommate was a sweet, solicitous woman. Early the first morning, the barracks door swung open, and two sergeants shouted, "Fall out -- on the double!"

I was walking swiftly to the door, when I felt a gentle tug. "I'll go with you, dear," my roommate whispered. "I think they want us to go out in pairs."
