Difference Between a Cook and a Chef info

AT SEA aboard the USS Saipan, I was passing by the ship's galley and overheard two sailors -- a veteran and a new seaman -- talking while they were on mess duty. "Hey, Bill," asked the younger, "what's the difference between a cook and a chef?"

"Simple," answered his shipmate. "A chef doesn't have tattoos."

So that's the difference, I thought it was the recipes.

My experience is:

A Chef makes inedible art, a Cook makes food designed to be eaten and enjoyed rather than judged on is presentation and artistic merit.

It's like the old saying, "You can't judge a book by it's cover" similarly food that has to be "prettied up" is generally lacking in substance and edibility.
