Post; Charleston, SC

I've got my wife's parents coming from Oz and we are meeting up with them in Charleston, SC.

We will be visiting Fort Sumter and my wife's father, (retired army) is going to expect that I've thoroughly researched the origins of the Civil war and Charleton's involvement.

I understand there is still controversy over what caused the start of the war and I would like to know more about it. Also any suggestions for touring the area, South Carolina's involvement or anecdotes regarding the start of the war are appreciated.

Thx all.

The causes are varied and many depending on which way you lean, and as to whether or not your a revisionist.
The big ones.
Tariffs
States Rights to self govern
States rights to secede
Slavery

As far as places to go in Charleston. It's got great historic sites besides Sumter. The Customs house, antebellums, parks and museums. You could also take a drive down to Parris Island and the Marine Corps Recruit Depot.
