WHILE STATIONED at the Naval base in New London, Conn., my father received orders that we were to be transferred to Hawaii. Since dogs and cats have to be quarantined for 120 days upon their arrival in the islands, we sent our cat ahead of us. Then Dad's orders were canceled. We didn't realize our circumstances were of particular interest to anyone else until my grandparents sent us a clipping from their small town's newspaper. The headline on the story read: "CAT VACATIONS IN HAWAII -- FAMILY STAYS HOME."
