Post; Britain pulls out from Basra base (AP)

AP - Iraqi soldiers hoisted the nation's flag over the Basra palace compound Monday after British troops withdrew from their last garrison in the city, a move that will hand control to an Iraqi force riddled with Shiite militiamen.

I dont know if we know how to interpret this. This is our eventual goal in Iraq, move from direct intervention to overwatch mode. Yet somehow this is deemed as a bad thing. The soldiers did not abandon the city to hoardes of terrorists, it sounds as if it was a transition from Coalition to local police and military forces.

Please note how the announcement of British troop movements is followed by comment on an American soldier's death. Sound like a spin?

Also note, the troops are not leaving the box, but are staying at a larger base. But I do not know, perhaps someone within the British military with first hand knowledge could comment.

The technical term is combatus interruptus.
