LONDON — Three former British residents who were held for more than four years in the Guantánamo Bay detention center arrived Wednesday at Luton, outside London, aboard a jet chartered by the government and were turned over to the police.
The transfer followed lengthy negotiations between the United States and Britain, which sought their release on the grounds that all three had British residence status when they were seized because they were suspected of having links to Al Qaeda.
Two of the detainees, Adbenour Samuer, an Algerian, and Omar Deghayes, a Libyan, both originally seized on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, were taken to a high-security jail in London. The third detainee, Jamil el-Banna, a Palestinian seized in Afghanistan, was held in Luton.
A government statement said the men’s return did not mean that they could remain in Britain.
A BBC report quoted British officials as saying that Spain planned to seek the extradition of two of the men in connection with terrorist attacks there.
