Post; Brazil makes semis at volleyball worlds

OSAKA, Japan - Brazil defeated Germany 25-16, 25-22, 25-15 on Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the women's world volleyball championships.
The Brazilians improved to 6-0 in the tournament.
"It's a good game for us," Brazil captain Helia Souza said. "We knew very well that this game would be very important for us. Germany wasn't an easy team to beat and everything wasn't as smooth as the score suggests."
Russia also improved to 6-0 by beating the United States 25-20, 25-21, 25-17 and will meet Brazil in its final second round match on Sunday.
China improved to 3-3 with a 28-26, 25-14, 25-22 victory over Puerto Rico.
In a late Group F match, the Netherlands defeated Azerbaijan 26-24, 25-22, 26-24.
In Nagoya, defending champion Italy defeated Taiwan 25-15, 25-13, 25-14 to move a step closer to reaching the Group E semifinals.
Italy improved to 5-1 in Group E with one match remaining in the second round.
"We played a good match without letting our concentration slip," Italian coach Massimo Barbolini said. "It was important for us to play this kind of match."
Also in Group E, Cuba defeated South Korea 25-19, 25-14, 25-22 to improve to 4-2 while Turkey downed Poland 25-18, 25-22, 25-19.
Host Japan defeated Serbia-Montenegro 18-25, 22-25, 25-18, 25-21, 15-11 to improve to 4-2. It was the first loss for Serbia-Montenegro, which dropped to 5-1.
