A CIA source in Pakistan has located where bin Laden is staying at night. The house in an isolated area of the Pakistan/Afghan Border that even the Pakistan military won't go into. He is staying in the house with a number of families who have children. The men of the families know bin Laden is sleeping at night in the house. They are allowing him to stay there willlingly.

Question: The USAF can easily put one bomb right into the house. Killing bin Laden and his guards but also a good chance of others in the house.

It is your call. What would order. To bomb or not to bomb?

Easy yes. The children's deaths won't come out until months later due to initial pakistani control over the press and by that point the public will be so overjoyed with the death of Bin Laddin the American populace really couldn't care less.

Yeah, I would bomb the house.

It's the same theory of shooting down another commerical plane before it could slam into the World Trade Center.

It is a hypothetical question put to about all US military officers in military ethics and law classes -- ie one Marine general even discussed it with his troops before the Spring 2003 invasion of Iraq. Only difference between there question and mine is the words "bin laden."

Yep, bombs away. They are willingly harboring a terrorist.

No, you can't just bomb the house. Even if you do kill him - how do you prove it with no identifiable remains?

Better to halo-drop (or otherwise infiltrate) an SF troop into the immediate area, take them all by surprise, and bring Bin Laden out alive.

Of course, this is logistically more difficult, and the risk of US loss of life is greater.

But fortune favors the bold, not the lazy, and the bomb is the lazy man's way to accomplish the mission.
