In my opinion, the best leader of the Soviet Union is Leonid Brezhnev. His leadership brought world attention with his country's accomplishments in outer space, athletic ability, and military power.

1917–22 Vladimir Ilich Lenin
1922–53 Joseph Stalin
1953–64 Nikita Khrushchev
1964–82 Leonid Brezhnev
1982–84 Yuri Andropov
1984–85 Konstantin Chernenko
1985–91 Mikhail Gorbachev

It would depend on whether you believe that Communism was a good idea or bad idea. If it was a good idea, then you'd prolly go with Lenin (despite all the bad things that he did). If its a bad idea, then Gorbachev was their greatest leader.

None of the above. They may be great leaders to some, but to those opposed communism, they were the leaders of a corrupt empire that threatened the world. Human rights violations, crimes against their own civilian populance, and numerous other atrocities litter the landscape of communism, and the world is better off without the Soviet Union.

Reason I'm saying Gorbachev is simple: He opened the door to the end of Communism.

If Communism was a good thing, then you'd have to choose Lenin for putting it into effect in Russia. If you believe that Communism was a bad thing, since he created the circumstances that lead to the end of Communism more than any other single person ... Gorbachev ought to be an obvious choice.

Economic nightmares occured largely under Yelsin's leadership. IMO, he pushed too hard at the wrong times. Had Gorbachev remained in power, Russia would have stood a better chance of gradually reverting to a Capitalistic system. Doing it quickly has proved disastrous. [/code]

Thats like asking: who was the best murdering paedophile psycho of all time

IMHO That is a bit of an overstatement. As to the matter at hand:

Best for Commies:
Nikita Khrushchev

Best for the Russian people and the world:
Mikhail Gorbachev

Lenin, Marx and Lenin would be very upset if they had seen what the future leaders of the USSR had done and how they perverted the communist ways.

Military power, that should be thrown out, yes, the Soviet Union was powerful but they paid a very, very heavy price for it, starvation, inflation, corruption, any other ions that were negative, with all the ways the leaders exploited their power it is amazing they stayed in power as long as they did.

I'd have to say lenin :D 2nd would definately be kustruv. The way he used to take off his shoe and bang on his desk at the U.N was great. Ahh memories...

Well, occoring to this:

the best leader of the Soviet Union is Leonid Brezhnev. His leadership brought world attention with his country's accomplishments in outer space, athletic ability, and military power

I would have to say he was the worst..... the space race was one of the major factors leading to the Soviet Union's Economic demise, the legacy of the Soviet Union's highly inflexible totalitarian oganizational structure, it's doctrinal basis, and Conscript system stll is having a damning effect on the Russian Federation's army, which has pretty much kept the same characteristics as it's Soviet ancestor, and resultantly has the highest Suicide rate and outdated tactics of any Army on earth.

And let's not forget all those political refuggess at international athletic competitions.... didn't really help out the cause for interational socialism (nor did those East German judges).

As somebody mentioned before, Krutschev was indeed the best for the communists but Gorby best for the rest of us, although Gorby did end our privileges as a trading partner and plunged our country into a huge economic recession.

Krutschev was an interesting personality with a flair for drama such as when he banged his shoe in the UN meeting. He served during WW2 as a political commissar in the Stalingrad front.

Here's some more info.

Gorbachev, he's the one I credit with realizing the obvious flaws in communism and finally setting the stage for its eventual demise.

Ps.. Why in the hell wont castro die?LOL

I'd have to agree with other guy on this one. Like Hitler, Stain was a good leader. He could get people to do what he wanted, even though he was a terrible man.

IMO the best leader for SOVIET UNION was Nikita Khrushchev, he helped the SU through the WW2, and many number of reasons.
