| No Chance Outside | RoK style. I have an amphibious raid qualification badge. It's enough I think.

| 100% Space Shuttle Door Gunner | I'm staying out of this one for personal reasons. I've earned my fair share of things and that's it. I don't talk about nor do I share it. I'm a strange creature. If you earned something then you earned it. 'Nuff Said...

| Forum Digger | Honestly, I have nothing against the skill badges, the bronze or silver stars, the CIB, or any medal that recognises long service (eg 15 years plus). It is the meritous service medals that sh*t me to tears. The only meritous service medals in Aus to speak of are the CSC or the CSM and you pretty much need to either have restructured a battalion, rewritten the manual of land warfare or merged 2 brigades successfully in order to get one. There is no lower scale recognition, because at that level, you are just doing your job. The purple heart is in my humble Australian opinion a joke. Our diggers have been getting shot, stabbed, filled with schrapnel and breaking bones for years... yet they wear nothing to shout it out loud in public. It is part of the Aussie culture that you shut your mouth and get on with it, cos no matter how bad it is there is some other bloke worse off than you. If years down the track you want to show a mate your scars when you are telling tall tales over a few beers, then so be it, but you don't flash it about, and it isn't something to be proud of.

| Milforum Moderator ![]() | My opinion is that people have a right to be recognized for what they do for their fellow soldiers and for their country in general. I don't know anyone who wears their PH just to go out drinking. I have mine and they stay tucked away in a box in the closet. I know what they mean to me and those who served with me each time know what happened at those times. Aussienick, I'm sure you folks do things differently and good luck to you. That's no reason to call my Purple Hearts (or anyone else's) a joke. There was nothing even slightly humorous about them to me, I can assure you. IMO, your comment is insulting and unfounded. Your entitled to your opinion but I must take exception to the way you've phrased it.

Once again mate, no insult intended to you or any other recipient of the medal. It's just the system that I find odd, and it is just different from the Aussie culture, as I said in my first post. I'll retract the word "joke" as that is probably a bit too strong. Last edited by AussieNick; December 3rd, 2007 at 20:51. | |
