A little more info would be useful.

Are you saying an animal was locked up as a POW by the Germans, Italians or Japanese?

The US coastguard captured a dog named Zipper along with the capture of the German naval auxiliary Externsteine

Perhaps a German Shepherd for Rabies purposes?

I'm thinking it was carrier pigeons. But I'm not sure.

Wasn't it the Polish corps in North Africa that had a captured/released bear as a mascot?

Yep although there seems to be some confusion over who had it some say an artillery unit and others say a transport regiment, about the only thing they agree on is the name of the bear (Voytek).
