AUSTRALIAN SUBMARINE CORPORATION WINS NAVY SHIP TENDER

31may05

THE Australian Submarine Corporation based in Adelaide has been chosen as the preferred tender to build the navy's new $6 billion warships, the federal government said today.

The taxpayer-owned ASC beat Victorian shipbuilder Tenix and a third bidder to win the multi-billion dollar contract.

Defence Minister Robert Hill said the decision was based on an unanimous recommendation from the Source Selection Board based on ASC's superior bid in terms of value for money.

Senator Hill said the destroyer project would be one of the most significant projects undertaken in Australia to date and would provide enormous job opportunities.

"More than one thousand direct jobs will be created in South Australia as part of the build contract," he said.
