Paramarines were widely admired, as were Raiders.
My dad says 2Lt Robert L Manning was killed while leading an assault into a gorge. Several Marines were wounded attempting to recover his body. They didn't want him lying out there, and it took a few days to clear the gorge and get him out.
There was another "canal" Marine in his unit named Boone. Dad went to the brig and got him out just before they loaded up to go to Iwo Jima. Boone was known to have little respect for authority, but was a fearless fighter. He went well ahead of the lines and took out around 6 pillboxes by himself before being killed in action. I have a picture of the bunker where his body was found. He was awarded the Navy Cross for his action on Iwo Jima.
As a group, they accumulated a lot of jewelry.
