Spain was exhausted from a long civil war (1936-1939) in which Franco's side received massive military support from Hitler's germany. Despite this support, Franco refused Hitler's request to join the war against Britain. Hitler then said he would "prefer to have 3 or 4 teeth extracted than suffer another meeting" with Franco.
