Its ERA (i hope), there bricks of explosive that when a missile/shot hits the tank the block explodes, directing the blast away from the tank. Modern missiles though such as MILAN 3 have tandem warheads, where the first part causes the brick to explode, then the second part carries on through to the metal armour.
