The US employs a pretty impressive acoustics detection system in the Atlantic Ocean. There are mics located all over that was designed to track Soviet subs during the Cold War. That was a good early warning system for the US.

But if you're talking about shipboard sonar, then that's different. The US uses TACTAS which is a cable full of mics that they drag behind their ships to detect enemy subs. I believe the new Virginia Class subs are using the Conformal Acoustic Velocity Sonar (CAVES). That's just a fancy new sonar system that they're putting into service starting with SSN-774.
