Radar works by shooting out radio waves then seeing if any of them get reflected back by things such as planes and even tanks. Sonar works by shooting out sound and seeing if that bounces back off subs, boats, and the like. They use sonar in the water because sound travels better under water while radar waves wouldn't travel well at all underwater.
