If it wasn't for warfare we wouldn't have the wonderful recreation that is called ballooning.

Probably the first example of balloons being used in warfare date to 2-3rd Century China (Kongming Lantern) and invented by Zhuge Liang.

They got a good look in in the US Civil War and the Russo-Japanese War (1904-5), especially the Battle of Liaoyang.
