if the mpg ain' a problem as much, go for a freelander / discovery 1 or discovery 2.
also, an LPG conversion for a 4x is a good idea, much cheaper + better mpg.

A good suggestion, but its not quite what I am looking for.
My dad doesn't need 4x4 and its much too big for downtown New York City. 4x4 tend to be gas hogs and at oils price of $135.
What I am looking for is a urban car that is ideal for quick trips to suburbia but that can also handle the winter weather of upstate New York and Vermont. Think Dirt roads, lots of ice and snow. But I am not looking for a ATV.
This is what we have now, I am looking in something in the same vein, although slightly smaller (big cars are a parking nuisance in big cities)
