Many New Zealand schools have rifle and pistol teams (They are slowly becoming more popular), the only thing holding back more of them is the availability of ranges to shoot at.
The High School I attended had Pistol, Target and Black Powder teams/clubs the latter is where I built my first Black Powder Mortar in metal shop.
For the most part these clubs are more popular in urban areas, probably because rural areas are more into hunting and grow up with firearms.
As far as first firearms go my first one was a Russian Model 1938 Carbine.
